Highlights This Month   

September Open House The Fitness Center is having an Open House on Saturday, September 17th from 10:00am-3:00pm. Admission to the Fitness, Aquatics and Tennis facilities is free to the public during the Open House, so if you're not a member, please come visit, and if you are a member, feel free to bring friends!

We're also having a special Family Fitness Day on Sunday, September 18th from 1:00-4:00pm, for families with children. Complete a series of fitness activities at various stations around the JCC, getting your family's "passport" stamped at each one, and then take your completed passport to the pool for food, prizes, and free pool admission for the entire afternoon. Open to members and non-members.

New Online Tennis Reservation System
The JCC has a new online tennis reservation system for Fulll Center Members.  To get your username and password, send email to tennisreservation@svjcc.org with your J number and first and last name . To make online reservations, click here or visit the JCC website, or call the JCC Service Desk at 357.7429. Full Center Members can reserve courts up to 48 hours in advance, for up to 1.5 hour time slots.
 

 

Patriot Day Activities

Sunday, September 11th is the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, DC. Commemorate the day at the JCC on September 11th from 1:00-4:00pm by participating in an interactive art project (bring family photos or mementos to paste onto the JCC's own Statue of Liberty), using flags to pinpoint your family's journey to America on a giant map, and viewing an art exhibit featuring paintings of the Statue of Liberty. Free, and refreshments are provided.

 

Interfaith Commemoration of September 11th

Wednesday, September 7th, 6:30pm at the McAfee Center for the Performing Arts in Saratoga  

The JCC is a co-sponsor of the local Interfaith Commemoration of September 11th, 2001, together with other local Jewish, Christian and Islamic organizations. See the Events web page for details or call 357.7492. 

 

JCC Annual Meeting

All JCC members are invited to the JCC's Annual Meeting on Sunday, September 11th at 7:00pm. We'll review the year and elect new board members.

Schedule Changes

This month's regular schedules: 

Holiday Hours

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is September 29th and 30th. Like all Jewish holidays it starts in the evening, so the JCC will be closing early on September 28th. Here are the JCC's holiday hours:

 

Wednesday, September 28th: 5:00am-5:00pm

Thursday, September 29th: CLOSED 

Friday, September 30th: Regular hours (5:00am-10:00pm)

 

On Thursday, September 29th, when the campus is closed, Full Center Members can use the fitness facilities at San Jose Athletic Club, 196 N. Third Street, San Jose (408-292-1141). 

 

The Tennis Open House that was scheduled for September 10th has been cancelled (it was moved to August).

 

Fall Enrichment Classes  

There have been a few changes to the fall class schedule for youth & adults programs since the JCC Fall Program Guide was mailed last month. Most dates & times are still the same, but to make sure you have the most up-to-date information, check the online version of our course catalog at http://www.siliconvalleyjcc.org/classes/.

How We AgeDr. Marc Agronin: How We Age: A Doctor's Journey into the Heart of Growing Old

Thursday, September 15th at 7:30pm

Dr. Marc Agronin speaks of life at the nursing home at which he is a doctor, a place that some would dismiss as "God's waiting room." RitLab (Ritual Laboratory): High Holidays

Thursday, September 22nd from 7:00pm-9:00pm

Make your personal Judaica more meaningful by creating it yourself!  Join the Contemporary Jewish Museum for a painting and collage workshop in which you'll make a personal, magnetic sculpture to express your feelings about the coming year. Marshall's HoneyHoney for Rosh Hashanah

Back by popular demand, Marshall's Honey will be selling honey in the JCC lobby again this year on September 21st and 23rd. 10% of the proceeds are donated to the JCC, and they will also be raffling off a $100 gift basket. The hours will be approximately 9:00am-6:00pm; watch for a sign at the Service Desk that will give exact hours soon, or contact Colin Braslin, JCC Membership Concierge, at colinb@svjcc.org or 357.7402. 

 

Surviving Your Yom Kippur Fast

Tuesday, Sept. 27th, from 7:00pm-8:00pm

If you're like most people you find that fasting on Yom Kippur is not only difficult but also can lead to headaches, frustration and moodiness. Figure out the right foods to eat not only the meal before the fast begins but also in the days before the fast. Full Center Member & Social Members: FREE. Non-members : $15.

Cantor Andres LevyCantor Andres Levy at the JCC

Save the date! Andres Levy, a nationally famous cantor, will be giving a free performance at the JCC on Sunday, October 2nd at 7:00pm. Cantor Levy is known for performing Jewish music in English, Hebrew, Ladino and Yiddish. Don't miss this great opportunity to hear some of the best Jewish music available today! San Jose Opera Guild Lectures

This year at the JCC, the San Jose Opera Guild is offering a series of lectures and performances reflecting San Jose Opera's current season. The series is held in the JCC Auditorium and is FREE for JCC members and Opera Guild members; $10 for the public. This month's lectures are on September 6th, 20th, 23rd, and 27th at 10:00am. New Fitness Equipment: VIPR

Carlos, Dan and Christine working with VIPRVIPR is a new way to work out! It may look like a large hollow rubber tube with holes in it, but it can revolutionize the way you exercise. It provides an effective whole-body workout. VIPR stands for VItality, Performance, and Re-Conditioning. Calling all Hip Hop Dancers! 

Sammy Ramirez from Season 5's 'So You Think You Can Dance,' will be teaching an AMAZING 2 hour workshop at the JCC! With all of the time spent practicing and training for club or school sports, it is important to understand how to fuel your body to reach your highest potential.
